A Letter to LifeScan Customers:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION About PocketScan Meters

Also marketed under the brand names:
SmartScan®, EuroFlash® and FastTake®

If you use our PocketScan® Meter (also marketed under the brand names: SmartScan®, EuroFlash® and FastTake®) to test your blood glucose, or if you recommend it to your patients, or distribute and sell it to customers, please take a few moments to read this important information.

The PocketScan Meter is designed to display test results in either milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or millimoles per liter (mmol/L). This is similar to reporting temperature as either Fahrenheit or Celsius.

The standard result measurement used in the United Kingdom and Ireland is "mmol/L."

Possible Display Error In Millimole (mmol/L) Setting
A small number of PocketScan Meters set to "mmol/L" may display test results that show a Y-shaped, non-numeric character in the "ones" position (see the figure below). The Y-shaped character occurs only when the meter is operated in the "mmol/L" units setting.

Y-shaped, non-numeric character

If you see this Y-shaped character on your meter display please call LifeScan Customer Care and we will advise you of corrective action. Do not interpret the Y-shaped character as a number, for example a "4" or a "9." Do not base any diabetes care decisions on a result that includes this Y-shaped character.

All PocketScan Users Must Contact us to Register for a Future Replacement Meter
Most people in the UK and Ireland will be testing using the "mmol/L" setting on their meter. It is therefore important that you contact LifeScan Customer Care for assistance so we can advise you of corrective action and arrange to provide a future replacement meter (see below for contact information).

Although you may have never encountered this Y-shaped character you should still contact us to arrange for a future replacement meter. Please note that it may appear the next time you change your batteries.

LifeScan Action Plan
LifeScan is fixing the meter's display error as quickly as possible. In addition, LifeScan is launching a comprehensive, worldwide communication program to alert PocketScan Meter users of this issue. In addition to mailing letters to registered meter owners and healthcare professionals, notifications are also being placed in PocketScan System Kits and Test Strip boxes. Owner's Booklets and Procedure Guides are also being supplemented with this new information.

Continue Your Current Testing Schedule
It is important that you continue to test your blood glucose per your normal routine developed with your healthcare professional. You can continue to use your PocketScan Meter as long as the "Y" character is not present on your display. As always, it is important that you closely follow the instructions in your Owner's Booklet when operating your meter.
