Becoming your own expert

Becoming your own expert

The more you know and understand about Type 2 diabetes, the better control you are likely to have over your condition. In order to live your life in the way you want without too many unpleasant symptoms, you will probably need to know even more about diabetes than the average doctor! You must be able to rely on your own knowledge. To gain this knowledge you will have to ask questions and learn about diabetes. Use your visits to your diabetes healthcare team to get the answers to these questions and gather the information you need. Becoming your own expert will enable you to handle whatever life may throw at you and continue living the life you choose.

The treatment of diabetes has changed a great deal in recent years, but public awareness has not really caught up. You are likely to come across a lot of people with out-of-date or fixed ideas, who think they know a great deal more than they actually do. The more knowledge you have about your condition, the more your expertise can help to raise awarness and dispell old-fashioned myths about diabetes.

You have to live with diabetes 24-hours a day, so becoming fully engaged with your diabetes and your own care is vitally important. If you are as active as possible in the management of your condition from the start, you will set yourself up for better control over your diabetes in the future. To help you have good management of your diabetes, follow these three simple steps to becoming your own expert.

1. Accept that you have diabetes.

2. Aim to have more knowledge about diabetes than the average doctor.

3. Work out a way to live your life with diabetes that suits you, in light of this knowledge.
